Rooted in Resilience: Nyokie’s Story
When Nyokie first arrived in Atlanta from Florida, life felt uncertain. Her parents had separated, her family was searching for a fresh start, and for a season, they found themselves without a home. During that time, Nyokie and her mother lived in City of Refuge’s women’s housing program, Eden Village, trying to rebuild while navigating the weight of instability and transition. Today, she speaks about that chapter with honesty, but also with gratitude for how far her family has come.
“We were homeless, and now we have our own apartment,” she said. “My mom has a job here, and it’s crazy to see how everything’s just changed for the better.”
Nyokie came to City School Atlanta in seventh grade after struggling to feel emotionally connected and supported in previous schools. Academically, she had always done well, but internally, she often felt withdrawn and unsure of herself. She describes herself as nervous, quiet, and someone who often lets others walk over her. At City School, that slowly began to change. One teacher described Nyokie as exceptionally driven and intelligent, but said her greatest growth happened socially and emotionally as she became someone others could rely on. Known for her kindness, honesty, and accountability, Nyokie became a steady source of encouragement for her classmates.
What made the difference, she says, was the genuine care she experienced from teachers, staff, and the larger City of Refuge community. The support was not just spoken about; it was lived out daily through encouragement, mentorship, accountability, and practical help for students and families alike.
“They actually put actions behind their words,” Nyokie said. “If they say they’re here for you, they’re going to be here for you.”
Over the years, countless staff members helped shape her journey. She recalls teachers and mentors who made learning enjoyable, helped her build confidence, and taught her life lessons beyond the classroom. Through summer camp and after-school activities, she discovered new experiences and opportunities that helped her grow socially and emotionally. Outside of school, Nyokie loves spending time outdoors. Fishing, hiking, camping, and exploring nature have become some of her favorite ways to relax and recharge. She also developed a stronger sense of confidence in herself and learned how to recognize her own value and voice.
Now, Nyokie is preparing for an exciting next chapter. She has been accepted to Xavier University of Louisiana, where she plans to study pre-med biology on the path toward becoming an anesthesiologist. For her, getting into college represents far more than academic success. It is proof of how much life can change with stability, support, and people who believe in you.
Looking back, Nyokie says the greatest difference at City of Refuge was the sense of genuine connection and care she experienced every day. For a young woman who once felt overlooked and uncertain, that community helped replace fear with hope and gave her the confidence to believe in the future ahead.
