A Future Built on Purpose: Miracle’s Story
Before coming to City School Atlanta, Miracle spent most of her time quiet and tucked away in the background. Growing up in Atlanta, she was focused more on simply being a kid than thinking about the future ahead of her. College, career goals, and long-term plans felt distant and unclear. Everything began to shift when her father, who worked with chapel services and after-school programs at City of Refuge, introduced Miracle and her siblings to the school community. From the moment she arrived in eighth grade, she noticed something different about the atmosphere. What stood out most was the sense of connection. Unlike other schools where conflict and division often felt normal, City School felt welcoming, supportive, and unified. Over time, that environment helped Miracle slowly come out of her shell.
Today, the once-quiet student confidently leads tours, participates in interviews, speaks during field trips, and engages with large groups of people with ease. She says the biggest transformation has been learning how to use her voice. From a teacher’s perspective, Miracle’s growth has been remarkable to witness. Once quiet and hesitant to speak up in class, she has grown into a confident young woman who is willing to share her thoughts and step into leadership. She approaches life with focus, determination, and a strong sense of responsibility, always following through on the goals she sets for herself.
“Being here taught me how to network and talk to people,” she shared. “Real-life skills that I’m going to need, I learned from here.”
That growth also changed how she approached her own struggles. Miracle says she used to believe she had to handle everything on her own, but the support and encouragement she found at City School taught her the importance of opening up and leaning on others. Mentors and staff members played a major role in that journey. She credits leaders like Ms. Valerie and Ms. Foley for creating spaces where she felt both supported and challenged. They encouraged her to grow, speak honestly, and become more confident in herself and her abilities.
Miracle is preparing to attend Georgia State University, where she will major in psychology and minor in sociology. Her dream is to become a psychiatrist focused on children and adolescents, particularly within Black communities, where she hopes to see more representation and support for mental health care. She wants to help young people process challenges early in life so they can enter adulthood equipped with the tools, confidence, and emotional support they need to thrive. Outside of class, Miracle enjoys spending time with friends, attending after-school activities, making videos, coloring, and simply unwinding together after busy days. Those small moments of community have become some of her favorite memories from City School. Looking back, Miracle believes the greatest thing City of Refuge offers is more than programs or resources. It is the feeling that people truly care.
“Being able to come to one place and get support for so many different parts of life means everything,” she said.
Today, Miracle is stepping into her future with confidence, purpose, and a clear vision for the impact she wants to make. The shy student who once stayed in the background is now preparing to help others find healing, hope, and a voice of their own.
