Finding Focus, Building a Future: Kevin’s Story
“I didn’t have any guidance,” he said. “I felt stuck. I was just surviving.”
Born and raised in Atlanta, Kevin built a career with his hands and his mind. He spent years working in the automotive industry before launching his own mobile mechanic business. Later, he transitioned into IT, learning computer repair at a small shop where space was limited but knowledge was not. From there, he advanced into more technical roles, eventually becoming a mechatronic electrical repair technician, repairing critical aircraft components. On paper, Kevin had experience. But when he was laid off, everything changed.
Without a steady income, Kevin relied on credit cards to get by, unsure how he would cover rent or basic expenses. At the same time, he carried a clear ambition to build a future in cybersecurity and advanced technology. What he lacked was access and direction. That changed when he was introduced to City of Refuge. Within days, Kevin applied. When he stepped onto campus for the first time, he wasn’t sure what to expect. What he found was a place that felt both structured and welcoming, where opportunity felt within reach. He was accepted into City of Refuge’s Tech Academy Cybersecurity Program. Even with years of technical experience, the journey required focus and persistence. The certifications he pursued are widely recognized across the IT industry, and earning them marked a major turning point. Kevin graduated from the program in May, a milestone that reflects months of hard work and determination. But his transformation didn’t happen solely in the classroom.
Through City of Refuge, Kevin was connected to The 345, City of Refuge’s men’s housing program. Facing mounting financial pressure and uncertainty about his housing, Kevin found the stability he needed to move forward. Housing, meals, and structure gave him something he hadn't had in a long time: stability and the ability to focus on his future instead of trying to survive.
“That took a huge load off my shoulders,” he said. “I wasn't worried about becoming homeless or how I was going to eat. I could focus.”
Inside The 345, Kevin also participated in financial literacy classes and received support from staff who helped him navigate everything from job readiness to personal challenges, including finalizing a difficult divorce. Step by step, the barriers that once felt overwhelming became manageable. With stability came clarity.
After completing his certifications, Kevin secured a role with Amazon as an AI data center technician. In this role, he manages servers and network systems that keep critical digital infrastructure running. It is a career step with a clear opportunity for growth, and Kevin is already looking ahead to what comes next. With a new career underway, Kevin also achieved another significant goal: securing permanent housing. The move marked a new chapter of independence and stability, reinforcing how far he had come from the uncertainty he faced when he first arrived at City of Refuge.
At City of Refuge, Kevin found direction, stability, and a future that now feels within reach.
Kevin’s story is a reminder that transformation rarely happens through opportunity alone. When opportunity is paired with stability, support, and determination, lives are transformed. Today, Kevin has a career, a home, and a future that once felt out of reach.
