From Incarceration to Inspiration: James’ Journey Through The 345 at City of Refuge
While in prison, James Norman knew something had to change. He just didn’t know yet how dramatically it would. When he first heard about City of Refuge’s reentry program, he had one thought: “My prayers have been answered.” That moment marked the beginning of a journey that would take James from incarceration to independence—fueled by mentorship, hard work, and a community that refused to let him fail.
Before arriving at City of Refuge, James was caught up in street life, disconnected from his family, and only present for his son in fleeting moments. His involvement in drug activity ultimately led to a three-year prison sentence. But prison wasn’t the end of the road—it became the turning point.
At the Atlanta Transitional Center, James took TYRO, a life-skills and leadership course that reawakened his values and grounded him in purpose. “It was so great, man,” James recalls. “It re-instilled the principles we were raised on—but in a grown up way.” After completing the course, he stayed connected to the City of Refuge team, who continued to support him even after his release.
That support only deepened when James moved into The 345, City of Refuge’s transitional housing for men. From food and healthcare to counseling and job placement, City of Refuge provided stability and resources that allowed James to save money, build confidence, and plan for a future beyond survival. “It gave me the distance I needed from the madness. I've been incarcerated before, and when you get out and go back into that same environment with those same people, you wind up easily doing the same thing.”
One of the biggest game-changers? The apprenticeship program. James worked alongside staff in everything from groundskeeping and car washing to inventory and logistics. “It was about exposure—and trust,” he says. That trust inspired James to take ownership of his future. A self-proclaimed “car guy,” he’s now enrolled in an automotive repair program while continuing to work on our campus. With skills in progress, financial aid secured, and a clear dream—opening his own shop—James is actively building a future he once thought was out of reach.
Today, James lives in his own apartment, just a few miles from both work and school. He’s a stock associate in the 180 Kitchen at City of Refuge, giving back to the same community that helped him when he needed it most. Through every challenge, James remained focused on one thing: being there for his son. “I want to see him graduate. I want to be present.” And now, thanks to the community at City of Refuge, he is.
When asked what he would say to the donors who make City of Refuge possible, James sent a clear message:
“Thank you. Please continue to do what you're doing. It's working. I'm living testament that it is working…This isn’t just the City of Refuge. This is the City of God.”
